breaking the habit and making the habit

Sun Nov 15, 2009, 1:01 PM
i get so SICK of my laziness when it comes to art!

i've been reading twyla tharp again and putting a fire under my ass to get going on some work. it was required text for color theory at my former college. a class i never got to take but i have the text so i'll make it work for me.

she has interesting ideas on forming creative habits and breaking out of a creative rut. one of which is to get really ANGRY at yourself for slacking at something you love. well i've got that covered.

she also brings up the interesting old debate over how much of successful art is actually based on hard work and skill and how much is pure luck or instantaneous, lightning-strike inspiration. she believes that hard work, preparation and routine are the true way to reaching artistic gold in any field. and she doesn't truly believe that 'luck' or momentary flashes of inspiration are responsible for the best art out there. rather she says that artists who train themselves rigorously are more prepared to be 'lucky' and be able to experience that moment of amazing creative genius.

between her and ayn rand, another of my female literary heroes who believes strongly in the value of hard work and perseverance, i need to reassess my goals and my reality.

so. a piece a week. or at least will POST what a week's progress has brought. i have a small 'community' to help me stay on course and give me honest feed back

twyla's criteria for good critics to go to for feedback include these :
1. a person who has talent you admire, something to teach you, good judgment
2. people who happen to be friends, who have your best interests at heart
3. people who do not feel the need to compete with you, no hidden agendas
4. people who have 'hammered' your work in the past so you know they will not be silent about flaws, and won't spare your feelings, people capable of brutal honesty

well i know i've definitely found a good handful of people i feel fit that description. so .. i know i can stay focused and determined. or else. i will beat myself into submission!

peace..

just trying to learn as much as i can at this point. trying new mediums and new techniques. second year art student at a community college. experimenting with paint is my biggest passion at the moment.. just deciding where i want to go and learning what i need to work on still... just a ramblin' along.
